On Saturday, organizations representing Algerian journalists and media professionals emphasized the importance of responsibility within the media sector, urging its members to defend Algeria against external threats and to highlight conspiracy efforts directed against the nation.
In a statement released to mark World Press Freedom Day, the National Organization of Algerian Journalists (ONJA) called upon media professionals to exercise a strong sense of national and professional responsibility. They were urged to uncover biased campaigns against Algeria and to protect the country’s image, achievements, history, and identity, especially as online attacks have intensified.
The ONJA firmly asserted that Algeria is a unified entity, with its national identity being non-negotiable. It urged media representatives to counteract media campaigns attempting to undermine the unity of the Algerian people and the nation’s fundamental values.
World Press Freedom Day was deemed an opportunity to assess the current state and future direction of journalism amid ongoing changes in the sector. The ONJA commended the political will demonstrated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune through concrete initiatives aimed at reforming the media landscape. The organization welcomed the Ministry of Communication’s willingness to engage in open dialogue with media stakeholders, facilitating discussions that allowed concerns about the profession to be expressed candidly and transparently.
This dialogue provided a platform for devising common strategies and practical solutions to address dysfunctions while enhancing the performance of media institutions.
Similarly, the National Union of Journalists and Information Professionals in Algeria (UNJIA) urged media insiders to remain vigilant and expose conspiracies against Algeria. The UNJIA noted the unprecedented attacks on the nation’s values, achievements, and historical constants.
According to the UNJIA, World Press Freedom Day presents a valuable moment to reflect on the significant advancements within the sector, attributed largely to President Tebboune’s steadfast political commitment, which has led to numerous legislative and regulatory reforms. The establishment of direct, permanent communication channels with media professionals is also highlighted as an essential development for the sector’s growth.
