On Thursday, in a statement made in Algiers, Zouhir Ballalou, Algeria’s Minister of Culture and Arts, announced significant changes regarding the state of the Algerian film industry. The recent restructuring of the Algerian Cinema Development Center (CADC) aims to enhance the efficiency and dynamism of cinema management and facilitate the growth of the film industry nationwide.
During an inspection visit to the CADC located in El Achour, Ballalou emphasized that these changes are a step toward revitalizing the Algerian film sector. He mentioned that the CADC has been given expanded responsibilities that will include not only managing and operating cinema halls across the country but also promoting and encouraging private investment in cinema.
The government’s new strategy involves numerous initiatives, such as monitoring film productions and fostering international cooperation in the field of cinema. In particular, the CADC is set to take charge of over 100 cinema halls nationwide, working under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and local authorities.
Ballalou highlighted the center’s critical role in developing and promoting both the film and audiovisual industries in Algeria. These adjustments align with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision of utilizing cinema as a lever for bolstering national identity and socio-economic development.
An essential aspect of the minister’s announcements included the ongoing construction of an integrated cinema city, where elaborate sets for upcoming cinematic and television projects are currently being developed. Ballalou called for an expansion of partnerships with the private sector, particularly in scenography and other cinematic components.
Additionally, the construction of a National Cinema Center is underway. This center will serve as a one-stop shop for professionals in the film industry, facilitating all necessary permits and approvals required for operating cinema halls, film production, and co-productions.
Regarding the legal framework surrounding the film industry, Ballalou indicated that they are in the final stages of preparing all necessary regulations to govern this sector, thus streamlining administrative processes.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of training in various film-related careers. The Ministry has signed agreements with several international specialized institutions to enhance the skills of professionals in the sector and boost creative capabilities in Algerian cinema.
These developments highlight the Algerian government’s commitment to fostering a robust film industry that not only entertains but also serves as a vital tool for cultural identity and economic advancement.
