Summary of "Bakaya Ahlem" at the Maghreb Monodrama Festival
The play "Bakaya Ahlem" (Bribes of Dreams) by the Essitar Association from El-Oued achieved notable recognition at the third edition of the Maghreb Monodrama Festival, held recently in El-Beida, Libya. Directed by Ahmed Nabil Messai, the play won awards for Best Integrated Performance and Best Actress, awarded to Chourouk Khaled for her role. The jury, led by esteemed Libyan actor and director Hassen Karfal, evaluated various performances, with "Bakaya Ahlem" standing out among the entries.
Adapted from a text by Abbes El-Harbi, this 45-minute monodrama addresses critical issues relevant to the Arab populace, particularly focusing on the Palestinian cause and its implications on both regional and international stages. It highlights the silence of nations regarding the violence inflicted by the Israeli occupation on the Gaza population.
In addition to the accolades for "Bakaya Ahlem," several other awards were presented to Libyan productions. Azzeddine Douili received the Best Actor award for "El-Moumetil El-Akhir" (The Last Actor), while "Djaret El-Kamar" (Neighbor of the Moon) won Best Scenography. The award for Best Text went to Abdelaziz Ouanis for "El-Moumetil El-Akhir." The festival was organized to honor the late Libyan director Azzeddine El-Mehdi and saw the participation of 11 monodramas from five Maghreb countries, curated from over thirty submissions.
Running from May 1 to May 7, the festival was organized by the El-Ghad (Tomorrow) Theater. Following this success, "Bakaya Ahlem" is set to participate in the second edition of the International Monodrama Festival scheduled from May 8 to May 11 in Tunis.
This recognition reflects the vibrant cultural dialogue and the artistic vitality present within the region, showcasing how theater can address and reflect upon critical socio-political issues.
