Summary of the ITF Junior J60 "Algiers" Tournament

On Friday, Algerian tennis players Kamyl Chebboub and Yacine Meghari emerged victorious in the boys’ doubles category at the ITF junior J60 tournament held at the Federal Training Center of the FAT in Ben Aknoun, Algiers. The duo defeated the team of Poland’s Wiktor Jez and France’s Amaury Abbas in straight sets, winning 7-5, 7-5. As the fourth seeds in the tournament, their win against the top seeds marked a significant achievement for the Algerians.

Despite this victory, the tournament was challenging for the remaining Algerian participants. Out of the total of 28 athletes—comprising 15 boys and 12 girls—who competed in both singles and doubles, only Chebboub and Meghari advanced past the initial rounds. In singles play, Kamyl Chebboub, Arris Bahloul, and Melissa Rym Benamar Kerfah achieved the best results for Algeria by reaching the quarterfinals, after which they were eliminated.

The finals for the singles category are set to take place on Saturday at 10:00 AM. The boys’ final will feature Venezuelan player Rodolfo Federico De Andreis against Tunisia’s Skander Nsairi, who is seeded second. Meanwhile, in the girls’ final, Tunisia’s Nadine Hamrouni, the top seed, will compete against the second-seeded Czech player Gloria Levinsky.

The tournament is officiated by Algerian referee Abderrahmane Cherifa, who holds a White-Badge certification. Asma Sahraoui has been appointed as the tournament director. Following this event, another international tournament, classified as a J100, is scheduled to take place in Ben Aknoun from May 10 to 17.

This tournament showcases not only local talent but also highlights Algeria’s growing presence in the junior tennis scene, despite mixed results in various categories. The achievements of Chebboub and Meghari serve as a point of pride for Algerian tennis, reflecting the potential for growth and improvement among emerging players in the country.
