Summary of the Recent Justice Measures Against Drug Trafficking in Algeria

On Monday in Algiers, Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to combatting drug-related issues and protecting society’s integrity. During his speech following the National People’s Assembly’s (APN) approval of amendments to Law No. 04-18 regarding the prevention and repression of drug use and trafficking, Boudjemaa asserted that legal authority would be strictly enforced to safeguard individual and societal rights against the drug menace.

He highlighted the increasing concern over the vulnerability of minors and individuals with health issues, underscoring that any aggressors targeting these groups would face rigorous legal action. The new law introduces potent repressive mechanisms aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by drug trafficking, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive approach that includes preventative, therapeutic, and punitive measures. This strategy aims to mitigate the detrimental impacts of drugs on public health, safety, and social order.

Boudjemaa outlined the key objectives of the new legislation: to enhance national security against drug-related threats, protect public health, raise societal awareness, and shield educational and public institution environments from these dangers. Furthermore, the revised law strengthens judicial mechanisms to trace the origins of both movable and immovable assets linked to accused individuals, enabling asset seizure and potentially severe penalties, including capital punishment for serious offenses.

In concurrence with these remarks, APN President Brahim Boughali praised the role of the National People’s Army (ANP) and various security forces in the fight against drug abuse, describing them as critical shields for young people and the community at large. He also emphasized the need for collective national effort to maintain social cohesion and encouraged the promotion of community vigilance as a crucial first line of defense against drug-related threats.

The collaboration among agencies, the legal framework, and community involvement are pivotal elements in Algeria’s determined stance against drug trafficking, aiming not only to deter criminal activities but also to create a safer environment for all citizens.
