Summary of Sonelgaz and Sonabel Partnership

Mourad Adjal, the CEO of Sonelgaz, has expressed the group’s readiness to assist the national electricity company of Burkina Faso (Sonabel) in advancing its projects, leveraging Sonelgaz’s extensive expertise. This commitment was articulated during a virtual meeting with Souleymane Ouédraogo, the Director General of Sonabel, in which both parties discussed potential collaboration opportunities. This meeting underscores the strong ties between Algeria and Burkina Faso, with Sonelgaz positioned as a strategic partner to bolster energy infrastructure in Ouagadougou.

Adjal highlighted Sonelgaz’s broad technical, human, and financial resources, referencing the group’s past successful collaboration with Niger’s electricity company, NIGELEC. The dialogue focused on key areas of partnership aimed at enhancing Burkina Faso’s electricity production capacity, improving transmission structures, refining the electricity management systems, and expanding distribution networks to increase electricity coverage.

A significant aspect of the partnership revolves around training and skills development. Adjal noted that Sonelgaz operates five specialized schools that offer high-level technical and administrative training. This expertise could play a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities of Sonabel’s workforce.

In response, Ouédraogo proposed sending a working team to Algeria to elaborate on a memorandum of understanding. This document would outline the mechanisms of cooperation between the two organizations, ensuring the effective implementation of agreed-upon plans that benefit both parties.

The collaborative efforts between Sonelgaz and Sonabel aim to strengthen the energy sector in Burkina Faso, ultimately contributing to national development and improved living standards through enhanced electricity access.
