Commemoration of the 65th Anniversary of the Martyrs’ Death in Bechar
On March 27, 2025, Bechar witnessed a solemn commemoration marking the 65th anniversary of the heroic sacrifice of Colonel Lotfi, Commander Farradj, and fighters Zaoui Cheikh and Brik Ahmed during the historic battle of Djebel Bechar in 1960. This event has been commemorated by numerous participants who reflect on the significant role this battle played in showcasing the Algerian people’s unwavering commitment to independence and freedom.
Addressing attendees, Ahmed Benyoucef, the wali (governor) of Bechar, emphasized that the heroic deaths of these martyrs exemplified the determination of both the heroes themselves and the broader Algerian populace in their quest to break free from colonial oppression, ensuring a unified and independent Algeria would endure through time.
The ceremonial events, presided over by local civil and military authorities, unfolded at the very site where the battle took place. Activities included the hoisting of the national flag by a unit of the National People’s Army (ANP), the recitation of the opening chapter of the Quran (Fatiha), and the laying of a floral tribute in honor of the martyrs. A tree-planting initiative aimed at commemorating this illustrious history also took place, with participation from the families of the martyrs, representatives of civil society, and local citizens.
Another significant ceremony unfolded in the Martyrs’ Square of Bechar city, where citizens gathered for a moment of reflection dedicated to the martyrs, which involved further recitation of the Quran and the laying of another floral tribute. The official delegation also paid tribute to Fadila Yagoubi, the widow of martyr Mohamed Yagoubi, celebrating his sacrifices made for Algeria’s freedom.
At the Islamic Cultural Center, heartfelt tributes were paid to the martyrs of the Djebel Bechar battle. Family members and descendants of Colonel Lotfi, Commander Farradj, and fighters Zaoui Cheikh and Brik Ahmed were present, signifying the nation’s gratitude for their ultimate sacrifices.
This anniversary not only celebrated historical remembrance, but it also highlighted a moment of community support as the local authorities distributed social housing titles to 40 families from the Kenadza commune during the proceedings at the Islamic Cultural Center.
