Tizi-Ouzou Hosts 4th Edition of Chaabi Singing Contest

In a vibrant celebration of musical talent, Kader Fateh emerged as the winner of the 4th edition of the Chaabi singing contest named after Ahcene Mezani, held on the evening of Friday in Tizi-Ouzou. Kader received acclaim for his moving rendition of "Ya moulate El Khana" by the well-known artist Samy El Djazairi.

Fateh’s impressive victory was closely contested, with Alicia Zedek and Salim Yalaoui claiming the second and third places, respectively. Both of these finalists showcased their skills by performing songs from the celebrated chaabi singer Amar Ezzahi, highlighting the rich tradition of this genre. The top three finalists were rewarded not only with recognition but also with opportunities to record singles of their performances and financial support from the organizing body, the Ibturen association.

The competition saw participation from 80 aspiring artists aged between 19 and 25, including about 12 young women. These participants underwent a rigorous screening process to secure one of the 10 spots in the semi-final, which took place on March 6. From this group, the top five performers advanced to the finals, competing for the coveted prizes.

Before entering the finals, the selected contestants participated in an intensive week-long training program focused on chaabi music, covering its history, evolution, and critical performance techniques, including on-stage presence. This preparation reflects the organizers’ commitment to fostering the next generation of chaabi artists, a popular style among the youth.

The popularity of chaabi music among young performers is clear, as they continually demonstrate their ability to master and innovate within this genre. This year’s competition was a testament to the vibrancy and relevance of chaabi music in contemporary culture, resonating well with both contestants and audiences alike.

Last year’s winner, Meriem Amrouche, left a legacy, captivating audiences and setting a high bar for the current participants. She was followed closely by Seddik Khodja Ghiles and Kamel Mazira, who secured the second and third spots, respectively, emphasizing the competitiveness and talent in the region.

The event, hosted at the Mouloud Mammeri Cultural Center, signifies a commitment to preserving and promoting chaabi music—an integral part of Algerian heritage. The participation of numerous young talents, supported by the community and the association Ibturen, showcases the continued relevance and evolution of this musical style.

As the competition concluded, excitement lingered in the air, promising a bright future for chaabi music and its ever-evolving landscape. The recognition of these talented individuals stands as a reaffirmation of the importance of nurturing artistic expression within cultural traditions.
