Summary of the Role of Civil Society Associations in Child Welfare

Bordj Bou Arreridj – On Sunday, Ibtissem Hamlaoui, the President of the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC), emphasized the critical role of civil society associations in supporting and protecting children’s rights during a visit to Bordj Bou Arreridj. This visit coincided with the International Children’s Day, underscoring the importance of focusing on child welfare.

Hamlaoui highlighted that nearly 50% of the 141,000 active associations across Algeria are effective and impactful, particularly those dedicated to assisting vulnerable children, including those with disabilities. She expressed her purpose for visiting Bordj Bou Arreridj: to assess the efforts made locally to support these vulnerable groups.

One notable example cited was the Amal El Hayat association, which specializes in care for children affected by cerebral palsy. This organization has provided medical and psychological care to over 8,000 children requiring significant support. Hamlaoui commended their work and reiterated that caring for vulnerable children necessitates substantial medical, psychological, and financial assistance from civil society.

Furthermore, Hamlaoui mentioned the need for collective efforts in coordination with the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Affairs to achieve optimal results for these vulnerable social groups. She praised local authorities, especially the Governor of Bordj Bou Arreridj, Kamel Nouicer, for their ongoing support of charitable associations and civil society organizations.

To further assist Amal El Hayat in its mission to cater to children with cerebral palsy, the government provided a new headquarters in the district, enhancing facilities for rehabilitation and integration of children with diverse needs, such as autism and Down syndrome.

As part of her visit, Hamlaoui toured the "Health and Rest" center associated with Amal El Hayat, which focuses on natural treatments and physiotherapy. Additionally, she attended a cultural event featuring performances by children with special needs and led a scientific training seminar that highlighted effective associative models supporting children, alongside a practical workshop on psychological support mechanisms.

In conclusion, the efforts of civil society associations in Algeria, particularly in regions like Bordj Bou Arreridj, are vital in addressing the needs of vulnerable children. The collaboration between government entities and these organizations is essential for fostering a supportive environment for children’s well-being.
