Summary of Reforestation Campaigns in Southern Algeria on International Day of Forests
On March 18, 2023, extensive reforestation campaigns were initiated across the southern provinces of Algeria in celebration of International Day of Forests. This year’s theme, "Forests and Food," highlighted the crucial role forests play in supporting nutrition and human well-being.
In Ouargla province, a tree-planting event took place in Ain El-Beida along the CW-204 provincial road. The initiative saw participation from various stakeholders, including Civil Protection units, forest rangers, workers, Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA), and various associations. Abdelhafid Hammiche, the local forest conservator, reported that since October 2022, approximately 100,000 shrubs of diverse forestry and fruit species had been planted. This total included 12,500 olive trees, 8,000 casuarinas designated as windbreaks, and 1,800 shrubs for green belts, contributing to local environmental health.
Additionally, the involvement of the civil community led to the planting of 1,678 shrubs, while public administrations, local governments, and members of the National People’s Army (ANP) collectively planted 5,145 shrubs. Furthermore, 1,277 plants were put in the ground as part of initiatives from educational institutions and vocational schools, showcasing strong community involvement in environmental sustainability.
Hammiche also announced the launch of two development projects focusing on the argan tree at nurseries in Sidi-Khouiled. Preparations for planting various forestry species in the upcoming 2025/2026 agricultural season were also underway.
In El-Meghaïer province, 500 shrubs were planted in Oum-Tiour, with 400 trees placed at the town’s entrance and an additional 100 near the local primary school "March 19.” The province also organized drawing contests for students and theatrical performances, aimed at educating young generations about environmental preservation. Laâredj Nehila, the province’s wali, emphasized the importance of continuing such initiatives to enhance the area’s image as a clean and green environment.
In Illizi province, the day’s celebration included the planting of 120 forest shrubs at the “Tinemri” experimental garden. The event was attended by Illizi’s wali, Ahcène Khaldi, who took the opportunity to review the reporting on plant distributions scheduled for the 2024/2025 season.
These initiatives not only aim at increasing forest coverage but also seek to engage local communities and particularly the youth in environmental stewardship, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Algeria’s natural resources. The overall objective is to enhance the local landscape and promote biodiversity, underscoring the significance of forests in improving food security and supporting communities.
