Summary of Recent Developments in Algeria’s Transport Sector

Introduction

In a recent plenary session at the National People’s Assembly (APN), Algerian Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud announced that the establishment of a subsidiary of Air Algérie, focused on domestic air transport, is nearing completion. This initiative aligns with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and aims to address inefficiencies in air services, particularly in southern regions.

Domestic Air Transport Development

Minister Sayoud emphasized that the new subsidiary will enhance the frequency and organization of domestic flights, addressing existing service gaps in several wilayas (regions), particularly those in the South. He noted ongoing efforts by Air Algérie to bolster its capacity for meeting regional and national demand for air travel.

In light of this, Air Algérie has currently chartered eight aircraft and plans to lease additional ones in the coming months. The procurement of 16 new airplanes is underway, with the first expected to arrive between July and August, and subsequent deliveries scheduled throughout the latter part of the year, extending into 2026.

Port Operations and Connectivity

In response to inquiries about port facilities, Minister Sayoud revealed a strategic vision for the sector that involves designating certain ports for import and export activities, a process already initiated for the past two months. Furthermore, he mentioned that Air Algérie is exploring a new flight route connecting Algiers with Oman, with discussions ongoing to actualize this development.

Livestock Transportation Initiatives

Addressing the logistics of imported sheep during the Aïd El Adha festival, Sayoud confirmed that the transportation process at the designated nine ports is proceeding smoothly, without any issues reported by the Ministry of Agriculture or other stakeholders. He highlighted a recent agreement between the National Rail Transport Company (SNTF) and the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate the transportation of imported sheep to the southern wilayas.

The first rail operation successfully transported 2,500 sheep from Oran to Béchar, with plans to extend this service to the eastern wilayas of Algeria. Moreover, the Ministry is considering utilizing Air Algérie’s cargo subsidiary for transporting sheep to remote areas during forthcoming festive periods.

Conclusion

Overall, the initiatives discussed reflect Algeria’s proactive approach to improving its transport infrastructure. From enhancing domestic air transport capabilities to optimizing logistics for agricultural imports, the government appears committed to fostering efficient transportation solutions for both people and goods. This comprehensive strategy aims to boost connectivity across the nation, particularly in underserved regions.

The recent developments signify a strategic alignment between governmental directives and operational enhancements within Air Algérie, positioning the airline to better serve the national market while also setting the groundwork for international connectivity.
