Alger – National Media Front: A Call to Action

During a recent address on Radio Algérie Internationale (RAI), Communications Minister Mohamed Meziane emphasized the urgent need to establish a national media front aimed at bolstering Algeria’s image and advocating for just causes globally. He articulated concerns about the transformation of international media into tools of propaganda serving specific agendas, underscoring the importance of a coordinated response.

Meziane highlighted the malicious plans targeting Algeria in recent years, which were thwarted thanks to the strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the heightened awareness of national media. These efforts have fostered unity in defending the nation’s interests, sovereignty, and dignity. He stressed the necessity for all media avenues and programs to unify in order to assert Algeria’s narrative against hostile international narratives, which are often backed by substantial resources and geopolitical alliances.

The minister expressed confidence in the human capital and expertise within the national media sector, advocating for their further development and organization through training, support, and a collaborative approach involving all responsible media institutions. He underscored that these improvements would enhance the performance of Algerian media in a competitive landscape.

Reflecting on the historical sacrifices made by national media to honor the legacy of Algeria’s martyrs (chouhada), Meziane reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting national media. He reiterated that the government would not spare any effort to enhance their global presence, particularly by activating the role of media diplomacy.

In light of current challenges, Meziane stressed the importance of maintaining the credibility that the Algerian press has earned on the international stage. He pointed out that the press has consistently aligned with the government’s positions and advocated for just causes, providing a platform for honest voices amid a media landscape fraught with misinformation.

The minister aptly described the role of national media in countering the rampant spread of fake news propagated by compliant tabloids. He criticized the indifference of international bodies towards ongoing violations against oppressed peoples, particularly the Palestinians and Sahrawis. To confront these challenges, Meziane advocated for better organization, regulation, and investment in the constitutional frameworks implemented under President Tebboune’s directives to protect journalists and the integrity of the profession.

Moreover, he acknowledged the resilient role of public media outlets, which continuously represent Algeria in various international forums, including RAI. He asserted that these media entities play a crucial role in shaping the country’s image on the global stage.

In conclusion, Minister Meziane’s address encapsulates a clarion call for strengthening Algeria’s media landscape as a means of defending its national identity, promoting social justice, and countering misinformation. His emphasis on unity, training, and proactive engagement reflects a strategic vision aimed at enhancing Algeria’s standing in an increasingly complex global media environment.
