Summary of Agricultural Cooperation Between Algeria and Italy

On Tuesday in Algiers, Youcef Cherfa, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, held discussions with Fabrizio Saggio, the diplomatic advisor to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and responsible for the "Mattei Plan for Africa." The aim of this meeting was to explore ways to expand the integrated Algeria-Italy agricultural project in Timimoun to include red meat production in the southern region of Algeria.

Present at the meeting were Italy’s Ambassador to Algeria, Alberto Cutillo, along with officials from various ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Higher Education, and Scientific Research, as well as representatives from the National Council for Scientific Research and Technologies (CNRST). This engagement highlights the strengthening of cooperative relations and partnerships between Algeria and Italy, particularly in the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, both parties reviewed the progress of the integrated project focused on the production of cereals, dry legumes, and pasta in Timimoun, covering an area of 36,000 hectares. This initiative is being executed by the Algerian-Italian company "BF El Djazaïr." The momentum of this strategic undertaking was positively acknowledged by both sides, recalling that it was officially launched in the agricultural season of 2024-2025, starting with the cultivation of durum wheat and legumes. This project is part of a framework agreement signed in July 2024 with the Italian group "Bonifiche Ferraresi BF."

The discussions also addressed extending the project’s scope to include red meat production in the south at the request of the Italian partner, BF. Additionally, the status of the project for establishing a regional training, research, and agricultural innovation center named "Enrico Mattei" in the Wilaya of Sidi Bel Abbès was evaluated.

Through this collaboration, Algeria and Italy aim to enhance agricultural productivity, diversify crop production, and improve food security, while also boosting local economies in the relevant regions. This partnership not only signifies a commitment to agricultural advancement but also reflects broader diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

Conclusion

The ongoing collaboration underscores the importance of agricultural initiatives in fostering international partnerships and achieving mutual goals in food production and innovation.
