National Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control: Key Insights

During the recent National Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control held in Algiers, participants emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive national strategy aimed at combating cancer, with a robust focus on prevention. This initiative aims to halve cancer incidence rates over the next decade.

Strategic Objectives

Pr. Adda Bounedjar, head of the National Commission for Cancer Prevention and Control (CNPLCC), outlined that the primary goal of the conference is to formulate a national strategy for cancer prevention and control for the period from 2025 to 2035. This strategy will be informed by recommendations from seven thematic workshops, which will be presented to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Bounedjar stressed the importance of prevention as the cornerstone of this strategy, positing that proactive measures can lead to a 50% reduction in cancer cases.

Challenges and Global Context

Kamel Sanhadji, president of the National Health Security Agency, highlighted the urgency of this initiative amid the ongoing global rise in cancer cases. He underscored the need for thorough research on cancer’s causes and the implementation of preventive mechanisms designed to reduce incidence rates. The recommendations from the conference will be grounded in scientific evidence and practical experiences, addressing key risk factors such as tobacco use, pollution, unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, and exposure to chemicals.

Sanhadji placed significant emphasis on public awareness regarding healthy eating habits, calling for a collective effort to transition away from current unhealthy dietary practices towards more nutritious options.

Patient Perspectives and Institutional Support

Hamida Kettab, president of the Algerian Federation of Cancer Patient Associations (FAAPAC), expressed hope among cancer patients regarding the outcomes of the conference, given that combatting cancer remains a national priority. She commended the establishment of cancer treatment centers across Algeria—currently totaling 21—and the creation of a dedicated fund for patient care.

However, Kettab pointed out existing gaps in patient care services and the pressing need for a cohesive national strategy that would effectively mobilize resources for cancer prevention and treatment. She highlighted crucial components necessary for the successful implementation of the national strategy, ranging from prevention and early detection to post-treatment support.

Conference Context and Next Steps

The National Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control spans two days and is organized by the CNPLCC under the high patronage of President Tebboune. The outcomes aim to streamline efforts across multiple sectors in the fight against cancer, ensuring a unified approach to improve healthcare services and reduce the burden of this disease.

In summary, the conference represents a pivotal step towards establishing a strategic framework to combat cancer in Algeria. With a focus on preventive measures, public awareness, and collaboration among various stakeholders, there is optimism for significant advancements in cancer care and a notable decrease in incidence rates over the next decade.
