Summary of the Police Operation Against Drug Smuggling at Algiers Airport
On a recent date, the Police aux frontières (PAF) at Algeria’s Houari-Boumediene International Airport, in collaboration with the Customs services, uncovered an organized international criminal network led by African nationals. This operation resulted in the seizure of 8,913 boxes of medications intended for smuggling.
The PAF’s efforts led to the arrest of an African woman who was preparing to board a flight to Douala, Cameroon. She attempted to illegally transport 1,312 boxes of medications for chronic diseases, which were concealed in her luggage. Following her arrest, a judicial investigation opened by the competent police brigade, under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office, exposed a broader criminal organization involved in international drug trafficking. This network comprised seven individuals, including five from various African nationalities and two who were staying illegally in Algeria.
Further inquiries revealed the network’s participation in other illegal activities, such as counterfeiting currency, fraud, and practices related to witchcraft. During a search at one suspect’s residence, authorities discovered the substantial quantity of medications meant for chronic conditions, alongside counterfeit notes of 2,000 DA and talismans associated with sorcery.
The operation also resulted in the recovery of over 41 million centimes derived from illicit activities, as well as various banknotes, including twelve notes of 2,000 DA and two 100-euro bills coated with unidentified substances believed to be used for fraudulent purposes. The apprehended individuals have been referred to the public prosecutor at the Dar El Beida court.
