Gérald Darmanin is advancing reforms in the justice system, proposing to extend the guilty plea procedure to crimes. Currently applicable only to certain misdemeanors, this procedure aims to alleviate court backlogs and expedite trial times. A past proposal to include drug-related crimes was removed during discussions. The process would involve a conciliation meeting and negotiations involving the victim’s agreement on sentencing. Darmanin is also focusing on simplifying civil justice and addressing chronic prison overcrowding through new constructions and classifying inmates by danger level. He plans to make public his findings before July 14, despite acknowledging that changes may take one to two years.
