17th Edition of Dourouss Mohammadia in Oran Concludes with Emphasis on Sufism
The 17th edition of the Dourouss Mohammadia, organized every Ramadan by the Belkaïdia Hebria zaouïa in Oran, concluded on Friday evening. This year’s event was themed “Sufism: The Essence of Religion and a Refuge of Benevolence.” The closing ceremony featured notable guests, including Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hoceini, the Rector of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, who delivered a poignant talk on establishing a spiritual life based on excellence, love, tolerance, and peace.
Sheikh Al Kacimi highlighted the importance of the purification of the soul, a core aspect of the Mohammedan message. He emphasized that "there is no success for the human soul without purification," indicating that the path of purification is critical in achieving one’s goals through Sufi education. He pointed out how Islamic Sufism is rooted in the Qur’an and relies on both science and knowledge.
The event took place at the Belkaïdia Hebria zaouïa’s venue in Sidi Maarouf, Oran, and was attended by various dignitaries, including local authorities, the wali Samir Chibani, and Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Noureddine Belkaïd, the current leader of the Belkaïdia Hebria zaouïa. The event was also punctuated by a talk from Dr. Ahmed Maâzouz, who reflected on the life and contributions of the late Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Abdelatif Belkaïd, the founder of the zaouïa.
This edition commenced on the first night of Ramadan, inaugurated by the Minister of Religious Affairs and Waqfs, Youcef Belmehdi, and stretched over nine days. The program attracted a wide array of scholars from Algeria and the Islamic world, including participants from Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Sudan. They engaged in a series of conferences that revolved around the central theme of the gathering.
Discussions included critical topics such as "Sharia and Truth," "Science and Knowledge among Sufi Masters," and "The Role of the Chadliya School in Promoting Sufism." Participants also delved into the contributions of renowned figures like Sheikh Sidi Abdelkader El Djilani El Hassani, exploring themes around the role of Sufi masters in teaching Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) across the four established schools and the overall impact of Sufism on education and personal development.
The discussions further included analyses of the various Sufi orders in Algeria, important texts from Sufi scholars, and the legal foundations of Sufism. Through these discourses, the event aimed to foster a deeper understanding of Sufism’s place within Islam and its significance in contemporary society.
In summary, the Dourouss Mohammadia served as a vital platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among scholars. It celebrated the contributions of Sufism to Islamic thought and practice, emphasizing its core values of moral excellence, patience, tolerance, and spiritual elevation. The gathering not only honored traditional teachings but also aimed to adapt these teachings to address modern challenges, ultimately reinforcing the belief that Sufism plays a crucial role in achieving a harmonious and enlightened society.
