Celebrating 63 Years of Independence in Algeria

On July 5, Algeria commemorated the 63rd anniversary of its independence, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. The interim president of the Constitutional Court, Mme Leïla Aslaoui, led the ceremony, emphasizing the enduring legacy of the country’s courageous martyrs and freedom fighters, known as "moudjahidine."

During the event, attended by numerous moudjahidate (female veterans), moudjahidine, and educators, Aslaoui expressed the importance of the date. She stated, “July 5 reminds us of how proud we are to live in a country freed from colonial rule.” The ceremony honored notable figures, including moudjahidate Djamila Boupacha, Zahia Khalfallah, and Zhor Ounissi, along with moudjahid Mohamed Tahar Abdessalem. Aslaoui recognized their contributions, noting their immense legacy for younger generations.

Emphasizing the spirit of perseverance, Aslaoui remarked that the determination exhibited by the martyrs and moudjahidine during the fight for independence continues to inspire all Algerians, empowering them in the face of modern challenges. “There is nothing insurmountable when faith in God is deep and loyalty to our cause remains a noble value,” she asserted.

The ceremony featured a documentary film highlighting Algeria’s independence celebration, followed by presentations from Mohamed Lahcen Zeghidi, coordinator of the Algerian History and Memory Commission, and Djamel Yahiaoui, a commission member. Their discussions centered on national memory and the sacrifices made by Algerians to regain national sovereignty.

The event encapsulated the spirit of resilience and gratitude, reminding attendees and the broader Algerian population of their rich history and the sacrifices made for freedom. As Algeria progresses, the values of determination and perseverance remain integral to the nation’s identity and aspirations for a prosperous future.
