Algeria Emphasizes Good Governance at Islamic Cooperation Parliamentary Conference
In a recent address from Jakarta, Indonesia, Brahim Boughali, the President of Algeria’s National People’s Assembly (APN), emphasized Algeria’s commitment to good governance as a "strategic choice" during the 19th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Boughali articulated that this commitment is part of a comprehensive reform agenda initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with a focus on modernizing state institutions while enhancing transparency and social justice. He noted that constitutional reforms in Algeria have fortified rights and freedoms, establishing principles such as peaceful power alternation and judicial independence in response to the aspirations of the Algerian populace.
Addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic crises, food insecurity, and geopolitical conflicts, Boughali asserted Algeria’s belief in the necessity of cooperation and collective action. He stressed that facing these challenges requires a unified approach, with shared experiences in good governance strengthening institutions that earn citizens’ trust.
On international matters, Boughali reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, labeling it the central issue for the Muslim community. He criticized the global silence concerning the injustices faced by Palestinians and called for solidarity amongst nations. Furthermore, he expressed concern over escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, urging both nations to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue.
He reiterated Algeria’s principles of non-interference, respect for sovereignty, and peaceful conflict resolution. Boughali called for overcoming disputes and increasing parliamentary collaboration, underscoring the role of lawmakers in implementing legislation that promotes good governance. He urged the development of a global model that marries national sovereignty with international solidarity.
Concluding his speech, Boughali expressed hope that the conference would yield constructive recommendations to bolster Islamic parliamentary cooperation, ultimately serving the aspirations of the people within the OIC member states.
