Arkab explore les perspectives de coopération avec le directeur régional du GGGI
Summary of the Meeting between Algeria and the Global Green Growth Institute
On Tuesday, Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, met with Mahamadou Tounkara, the Regional Director of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Tounkara was visiting Algeria to participate in the annual assemblies of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), which are taking place from May 19 to 22.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters, included Karima Tafer, the Secretary of State for Mines, and other ministry officials. It focused on exploring cooperation between Algeria and GGGI, particularly in supporting Algeria’s energy and sustainable development projects. Key projects discussed included renewable energy, green hydrogen, clean mobility, and energy efficiency across various sectors such as industry, housing, and transportation.
Additionally, both parties addressed how GGGI could support Algeria in reducing its carbon footprint and provide technical and financial assistance in areas like agriculture development, seawater desalination, and electricity transport and storage. They emphasized technological cooperation and enhancing sustainable development and equitable energy transition.
Minister Arkab highlighted Algeria’s commitment to developing a new energy model based on diversification, sustainability, and sovereignty. This involves increasing investments in clean energy and developing the necessary infrastructure while considering Algeria’s international climate and environmental commitments.
Tounkara acknowledged Algeria’s progress in the energy transition and expressed GGGI’s readiness to provide technical and financial support, as well as the necessary expertise to help Algeria formulate and implement value-added green policies and projects aimed at achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The GGGI, established in 2012 at the RIO +20 Summit, aims to assist emerging economies in their green growth processes through technical, institutional, and financial partnerships, striving for balanced economic growth while safeguarding environmental resources and ensuring social inclusion and climate justice.
