Summary of Algeria-Turkey Cooperation in Energy and Mines
On Thursday, Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, spoke with Turkish Minister of Industry and Technologies, Mehmet Fatih Kacir, about enhancing bilateral cooperation in hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, and renewable energy. This communication underlined the importance of steady collaboration and acknowledged the impressive level of partnership between the two nations.
Arkab highlighted the necessity for both countries to exploit available opportunities and strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including hydrocarbons, renewable energy, the petrochemical industry, electricity transport, and mining, particularly in geological exploration, extraction, and processing of mineral resources.
Kacir emphasized the need for enhanced coordination and broader partnership avenues, reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to strengthening fraternal ties with Algeria. He pointed out that sectors such as energy and renewable resources hold great promise for joint investments.
The conversation also touched on the historical and robust nature of Algerian-Turkish relations, which have been notably strengthened in recent years under the leadership of Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This growth has been characterized by increased high-level political dialogue and enhanced economic and commercial exchanges.
Cooperative efforts span various areas, including oil and gas, renewable energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing industries. Turkish investments in Algeria, especially in energy and mining, are on the rise.
The ministers discussed successful bilateral cooperation models, including a joint petrochemical project between Algeria’s Sonatrach and Turkey’s Renaissance Holding in Ceyhan, Adana Province. They also mentioned collaborations between Algeria’s Sonarem and Turkey’s Tosyali, focusing on the extraction and processing of iron ore, as well as other projects with Turkish companies like Ozmert in mineral resource exploration and industrial processing.
This phone call is part of an active dynamic characterizing Algerian-Turkish relations, highlighted by the recent 12th session of the Algeria-Turkey Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation. This session was co-chaired by Arkab and Turkish Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Ozdemir, on May 8, 2024, in Ankara.
