Summary of the A3+ Group’s Statements on Political Transitions in Central Africa

On Monday in New York, the A3+ group—comprising Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Guyana—commended the peaceful political transitions occurring in Central Africa, highlighting them as significant strides towards enhancing democratic governance, fostering national reconciliation, and restoring public trust.

During a briefing on Central Africa, the group expressed approval for the recent positive developments in the region, particularly the peaceful political transitions in Chad, Gabon, and São Tomé and Príncipe. The group’s representative, Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu of Sierra Leone, pointed out that these transitions represented essential progress in promoting democratic governance.

The A3+ group also acknowledged the contributions of the United Nations Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) in strengthening peace and stability, as well as its cooperation with regional organizations, UN missions, and resident coordinators in the area. Despite their commendation, the A3+ expressed concern over the decrease in resources allocated to UNOCA, urging international partners to bolster the office’s financial and human resources to fulfill its mandate effectively.

In discussing the security situation in the Lake Chad Basin, the group noted significant concerns regarding ongoing attacks from armed groups, including the terrorist organization Boko Haram and its affiliates. They unequivocally condemned these assaults, emphasizing their severe impact on civilian populations and the hindrance to peace and socioeconomic recovery efforts.

Furthermore, the A3+ group raised worries about the ramifications of conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on neighboring countries, particularly Chad and the Central African Republic, which are hosting refugees. They stressed the need for increased international support for humanitarian efforts and advocated for enhanced diplomatic initiatives to address the root causes of these crises while promoting sustainable peace.

The group welcomed the Economic Community of Central African States’ (ECCAS) decision to establish a humanitarian assistance fund, calling on all partners to support this regional initiative and contribute generously to the 2025 humanitarian response plan.

Lastly, the A3+ group reaffirmed the vital role of the African Union in peace and security efforts within the region. They reiterated their commitment to working collaboratively with UNOCA to foster peace, stability, and development throughout Central Africa.

This summary encompasses the key points and sentiments expressed by the A3+ group during their recent briefing, while presenting a clear and coherent narrative regarding their position on critical issues facing Central Africa.
