The national football team of Algeria, composed of local players, is set to face Rwanda on Monday at Mustapha-Tchaker Stadium in Blida at 8:00 PM. This friendly match is an essential part of Algeria’s preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which has been postponed to 2025 and will take place from August 2 to August 30 in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
Head coach Madjid Bougherra has organized this match as a strategic assessment of his squad, inviting a total of 23 players, including new defender Achraf Abada from ASO Chlef. The friendly aims to evaluate the players’ fitness levels and test different strategies ahead of the final preparations for CHAN.
This match comes just a month after Algeria secured its spot in the CHAN finals, following a successful double-header against Gambia, concluding with a 3-0 victory in Annaba after an initial draw in Bakau.
On the opposing side, Rwanda’s team, managed by Algerian coach Adel Amrouche, is also gearing up for their challenges. They recently played a friendly against Algeria’s national team, led by Vladmir Petkovic, where they suffered a 2-0 loss at Chahid-Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine.
In the CHAN tournament, Algeria is placed in Group C, facing Uganda, Niger, Guinea, and South Africa, which advanced through the playoffs. Besides CHAN, Algeria will also participate in the FIFA Arab Cup, scheduled for December 1-18, 2025, in Qatar, where they are in Group D with Iraq, plus the playoff winners from Bahrain-Djibouti and Lebanon-Sudan.
Meanwhile, Rwanda is focused on the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, scheduled to resume in September with matches against Nigeria and Zimbabwe. After the sixth matchday in March, Rwanda’s Amavubi stands second in their group with 8 points, trailing behind South Africa, who leads with 13 points.
This friendly is a crucial opportunity for both teams to refine their strategies as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
