Summary of Skin Collection Operation in Algeria

The Algerian Ministry of Industry has initiated a collection operation for the skins of sacrificed sheep this year, aiming to recover 40% of skins. The operation is conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders and is proceeding successfully across the country’s wilayas, as reported by Mokdad Agoun, the director of strategic monitoring at the ministry.

Collecting and Transporting Skins

The initial phase of this operation began during the first two days of Aid el Adha, focusing on the organized collection and transport of skins to sorting centers. This phase has been executed smoothly and according to a predetermined schedule. Agoun highlighted that the operation is particularly strong in five pilot wilayas: Algiers, Oran, Batna, Djelfa, and Jijel.

Processing of Skins

The second phase, involving the processing of the collected skins, is currently underway in collaboration with local operators and professionals, with plans extending into the upcoming week. The public enterprise "Getex," which specializes in textile and leather industries, plays a crucial role in this initiative, actively receiving the collected skins to ensure they are utilized as raw materials.

Oversight and Evaluation

Directors of Industry from various wilayas are closely monitoring the operation’s progress, adhering to the established plan to ensure its effectiveness. At the conclusion of the campaign, a comprehensive report will be generated, assessing both industrial and environmental impacts.

Awareness Campaign and Improvement Goals

The national campaign aims to enhance the recovery rate of sheep skins from 29% last year to 40% this year. To support this initiative, public authorities have engaged in widespread awareness efforts about the importance of proper skin collection and preservation techniques. Public guidelines include avoiding washing the skins, using salt to prevent deterioration, and depositing them at designated collection points.

Establishment of Collection Points and Digital Support

This year’s campaign features the establishment of collection points in various communities. Additionally, the Ministry has introduced two digital applications: "Mriguel Hidoura," which helps users locate collection points via an interactive map, and "Moustafid," allowing individuals to donate skins online through intermediaries.

Conclusion

The comprehensive approach of this campaign reflects Algeria’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and resource utilization. Through collaboration, technological advancements, and community involvement, the initiative seeks to make significant strides in wool and leather processing, benefiting both the economy and environmental stewardship.
