Launch of the “Hiya” Program to Support Algerian Female Filmmakers
The National Center for Cinema and Audiovisual (CNCA) in Algeria has announced the launch of a training program named "Hiya" (Arabic for “She”), aimed at supporting film projects by female filmmakers.
Tailored specifically for women who have proposals for short fiction films, the program will facilitate interactions among filmmakers and offer hands-on workshops, directed by filmmaker Yasmine Chouikh. These events are scheduled for June 29 and 30 at the CNCA headquarters in Algeria. Following the workshops, participants will enter a year-long mentorship period from July 2025 to June 2026, designed to provide individual and professional guidance.
The program’s main goals are to enhance the technical skills of participants, guide their film projects from conception to production, and create new venues for the exchange of experiences and cinematic expertise. Additionally, it seeks to bolster the representation of women in the film industry by providing technical support and facilitating access to a network of cinema professionals.
Women interested in participating must submit their short fiction film proposals, with a maximum duration of 13 minutes. Application forms can be found and downloaded at CNCA’s official link. Completed applications should be sent to the email provided by June 20. Following the evaluation of submission materials, five candidates will be selected.
