Summary: First Edition of African School Games in Algeria
Approximately 3,500 young students from 22 countries are set to participate in the inaugural African School Games, scheduled to take place from July 25 to August 5 in four cities in northeastern Algeria. Amar Brahmia, the president of the organizing committee, made this announcement during a press conference hosted by the Algerian National Organization of Sports Journalists (ONJSA).
Scope and Preparations
Brahmia indicated that Algeria is fully prepared to host these games, accommodating up to 4,000 athletes with the necessary human and material resources. The local governors of the four cities—Constantine, Annaba, Skikda, and Sétif—have been supportive, facilitating the organizational process to ensure the event’s success.
He mentioned that participation in the games would be free for all nations wishing to engage, fostering inclusivity and accessibility. The competition will feature young athletes born between 2008 and 2011, specifically focusing on the 2008-2009 age group. However, he noted that some competitions may be canceled due to the lack of participants, reflecting regulations from the International School Sports Federation (ISF).
Government and Institutional Support
The games are organized under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and in collaboration with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA) and the International School Sports Federation (FISS). To further support participation, Algeria is exploring options for low-cost flights to assist disadvantaged athletes in attending.
Event Programming and Sports Disciplines
The events will span 25 different disciplines, including athletics, swimming, football, judo, taekwondo, skateboarding, beach volleyball, and 3×3 basketball. Each of the seven ACNOA zones will have the opportunity to qualify two national teams in collective sports.
Beyond competition, the African School Games aim to promote educational and civic values through sports, uncover potential talents across the continent, and strengthen sporting cooperation among African nations. The event reflects Algeria’s commitment to the development of school sports and its capacity to host significant international sporting events.
