Summary of Humanitarian Initiatives in Algeria During Ramadan

As the holy month of Ramadan commences, numerous social and humanitarian organizations in Algeria have launched significant initiatives to support the needy and travelers by opening over 2,200 Iftar restaurants nationwide. These actions are part of a broader effort to foster solidarity and communal support during this sacred period, as reported by Mohamed Charmat, the Director of the Associative Movement and Humanitarian Action at the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Affairs.

According to Charmat, since the beginning of Ramadan, these associations and private individuals have managed to provide approximately 600,000 meals daily, catering especially to fasting individuals, with a focus on helping those in need and travelers. To operate these restaurants, associations obtained necessary permits from local multi-sectoral commissions, which are overseen by the regional directorates of social action and solidarity. The granting of these permits comes after a thorough inspection to ensure compliance with health and hygiene standards.

In addition to the Iftar restaurants, approximately 310,871 food parcels have been distributed to underprivileged families by various charities and benefactors. This distribution is coordinated with local social action authorities, reinforcing the spirit of solidarity that is deeply rooted in Algerian society. The collective efforts highlight communal assistance and the willingness to support those facing economic hardships.

Furthermore, nearly 1,300 families comprising female producers, artisans, and homemakers have participated in solidarity markets, organized in coordination with regional commerce and social action services. This initiative allows these women to promote and sell their products, fostering economic independence and empowerment within this demographic. Prior to Ramadan, outreach campaigns were conducted by community support cells to encourage homemakers to partake in these markets, thereby contributing to the overall economic development during this critical time.

Overall, these activities reflect Algeria’s strong commitment to traditional values of solidarity and mutual aid, demonstrating how community-driven efforts can significantly improve the lives of those in need during a time of fasting and reflection. As these initiatives continue throughout Ramadan, they serve not only to nourish the body but also to enrich the spirit of community in Algeria.
