Summary of the Minister’s Visit to Oran on Tourism Development

Introduction

On Saturday, Houria Meddahi, Algeria’s Minister of Tourism and Handicraft, emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming tourism into a vibrant and rewarding sector. This initiative aims to create jobs, generate wealth, and support the national economy.

Tourism as an Economic Lever

During her press conference in Oran, Meddahi articulated the government’s strategic vision to position tourism as a vital engine for economic growth. By generating employment opportunities and foreign currency inflow, the tourism sector is poised to significantly contribute to Algeria’s economic landscape. She highlighted the rich natural and cultural resources of the country as a foundation for this development.

Investment in Hospitality

Meddahi visited several hotels in Oran, showcasing the government’s focus on enhancing tourism infrastructure. The inspections are part of a broader strategy to strengthen investment in this sector, aimed at expanding capacity, upgrading service quality, and generating new job opportunities. She noted that the establishments she visited serve as exemplary models of successful partnerships between the state and private investors.

Oran as a Business Tourism Hub

Highlighting Oran’s importance, Meddahi described the city as a burgeoning center for business tourism. Its reputation as a crucial economic hub makes it an attractive destination for businesspeople and investors alike. She emphasized that Oran’s potential for business tourism can play a key role in the broader ambitions of the national economy.

Tourism Projects in Focus

During her visit, Meddahi inspected projects such as the "Belvédère Hills" hotel and the tourist complex "Les Andalouses" in Aïn El Turck. She reiterated the importance of preparing adequately for a successful tourist season, which includes catering to both Algerian families and the diaspora. The introduction of new hotels will enhance service competitiveness and contribute to better pricing.

Beach Renovation and Improvement Efforts

At Aïn Franine beach, which has been closed for two years due to landslides, Meddahi reviewed plans for its restoration. She stressed the need to upgrade all 33 designated swimming beaches in the region, aiming for consistent standards to ensure optimal conditions for the summer tourist season.

New Hotel Openings

In the morning, Meddahi inaugurated the "2H" hotel, which has a capacity of 390 beds and creates 125 jobs. She also launched the renovated "Grand Hotel" and visited the ongoing construction of the "Miramar" hotel complex, highlighting the continuous efforts to bolster the hospitality industry.

Conclusion

Minister Houria Meddahi’s visit underscores a significant drive by the Algerian government to elevate the tourism sector. By investing in diverse resources and enhancing hotel infrastructure, the government seeks to foster economic development, create jobs, and position Algeria as a key player in the global tourism market.
