Summary of Developments on the East-West Highway Maintenance

The Algerian Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructures has initiated a study aimed at enhancing the maintenance operations of the East-West Highway, with the goal of sustainably improving its quality. Minister Lakhdar Rekhroukh announced this during a parliamentary session on Thursday, emphasizing the need for thorough planning to address the existing degradation on this crucial route, which stretches over 1,200 kilometers.

During the session dedicated to oral questions, chaired by Assembly Vice President Adel Meitah, Minister Rekhroukh, along with the Minister for Relations with Parliament, Kaouter Krikou, highlighted the urgency and importance of modernizing maintenance practices in accordance with contemporary technical standards. The minister stated that the results of this in-depth study would later inform budget requests, to be included in financial laws starting in 2026. The allocated funds will be directed towards regular and periodic maintenance operations, establishing a sustainable approach that improves service quality for users of the highway.

This maintenance initiative is part of a broader effort that includes previously launched projects. Notable examples include the maintenance project for the Djebabhia slope in Bouira, which is currently 70% complete, and a rehabilitation project focusing on damaged sections in Bordj Bou Arreridj, with a progress rate of 24%. Additionally, another project targets the rehabilitation of degraded points along the segment connecting the western borders of Sétif to the eastern borders of Skikda, underlining the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of critical infrastructure.

Minister Rekhroukh emphasized that these proactive maintenance operations are vital for maintaining the highway’s integrity and ensuring the seamless movement of people and goods across Algeria. The planned upgrades and rehabilitation efforts aim not only to address current concerns but also to set a precedent for future infrastructure management in the country.

In conclusion, the Algerian government is taking decisive steps towards enhancing the reliability and safety of the East-West Highway through comprehensive maintenance strategies, which are expected to significantly benefit users and boost overall infrastructural quality in the long term.
