L’importance du patrimoine dans l’ancrage de l’identité nationale chez les jeunes algériens soulignée
The Importance of Heritage in Shaping Algeria’s National Identity
On Saturday, Mohamed Sahnouni, a renowned archaeologist and researcher, highlighted the crucial role that heritage plays in anchoring national identity among Algerian youth. He emphasized the need for advanced education to cultivate an elite capable of meticulous work in the field of archaeology.
Speaking at a scientific gathering attended by student clubs and young volunteers in preparation for the 2024 Algerian Scholar Awards ceremony, Sahnouni marked the occasion aligned with the National Student Day (May 19) and the Heritage Month (April 19 – May 19). He noted that Algeria’s tangible and intangible heritage, comprising various sites and archaeological monuments, conveys meanings that transcend national borders. This heritage serves as a source of pride for Algerian youth and empowers them to contribute to the preservation of their national identity.
Sahnouni urged those interested in archaeological research in Algeria to focus on advanced education to develop a generation capable of leading detailed projects that reveal new discoveries and highlight archaeological sites within a national framework. He remarked that ongoing archaeological findings across the country underscore Algeria’s status as the cradle of civilizations since the dawn of humanity. Discoveries at sites like Aïn Lahnech and Aïn Boucherit rank among the oldest in Africa and worldwide, showcasing human behavior and adaptation in North Africa.
He advocated for the involvement of university students and high school students in exploration and prospecting activities, fostering awareness of the challenges Algeria faces in preserving its history and defending its cultural identity. He suggested that archaeological programs should be integrated at all educational levels to create a comprehensive educational approach.
The Algerian Scholar Award Foundation is a volunteer cultural institution that recognizes Algerian scholars and researchers who have honored their country through their contributions in various fields.
In summary, Sahnouni’s insights underline the significance of heritage in nurturing a strong sense of identity among Algerian youth, calling for robust educational frameworks that equip future leaders to safeguard this cultural legacy.
