La Chine appelle à des mesures urgentes pour parvenir à une solution globale et durable à la question palestinienne

China Calls for Urgent Action on Palestinian Issue at UN

Geng Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized the necessity for immediate actions to address the Palestinian issue during a recent UN commemoration marking the 77th anniversary of the Nakba. He insisted that only through the implementation of a two-state solution can the historical injustices faced by the Palestinian people be resolved.

Context of the Nakba

Geng reflected on the historical context, stating that 77 years ago, over half of the Palestinian population was either expelled from their homes or fled, marking the beginning of a long struggle for their rights and legitimate interests. He expressed concern that the historical injustice suffered by Palestinians remains unaddressed and continues to worsen.

Current Humanitarian Crisis

He pointed out the devastating consequences of the ongoing violence in Gaza, reporting that approximately 53,000 Palestinians have lost their lives. The situation has escalated into what Geng described as an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe affecting nearly two million individuals due to intensified blockades by Israeli forces.

Colonial Expansion and Violence

Geng also criticized the continuous expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the rising violence among settlers, warning that these actions effectively diminish the space available for Palestinians and undermine the prospects for a viable two-state solution.

Calls for Ceasefire and Compliance with International Law

The representative stated that the Palestinian question is central to Middle Eastern geopolitics and crucial for long-term peace, stability, and security in the region. He called for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and urged measures to alleviate the humanitarian disaster.

He appealed for Israel to adhere to UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, respect provisional measures, and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. Geng demanded that Israel halt all military actions and breaches of international humanitarian law, lift the Gaza blockade, cease settlement activities in the West Bank, and end settler violence.

Support for Palestinian Statehood

Reiterating China’s long-standing position, Geng reaffirmed support for an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He advocated for Palestine’s complete and unconditional membership in the United Nations.

In conclusion, Geng called on all peace-loving nations to collaborate with China to promote the two-state solution and achieve a comprehensive, just, and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian issue, aiming to relegate the Nakba to history.
