The proposed maternity leave law is part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to enhance social benefits for working women. The legislation aims to introduce provisions that offer significant support to working mothers, particularly those giving birth to children with disabilities or severe health conditions requiring prolonged medical attention. Specifically, it allows for an initial extension of maternity leave by 50 days following the standard 150-day period for mothers of newborns needing special care. Furthermore, an additional extension of up to 165 days can be granted based on the health status of the child.
