Algeria’s Local Team Triumphs Over Gambia to Secure CHAN 2025 Qualification

On Friday evening, the Algerian A’ national football team, composed entirely of local players, achieved a resounding victory against Gambia, winning 3-0 at the 19-May 1956 Stadium in Annaba. This win guarantees Algeria’s place in the final phase of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), scheduled from August 2 to 30.

The match followed an earlier goalless draw in Bakau, where Algeria was under pressure to secure a win to advance. Initially, the team’s anxiety became apparent, as they struggled to find their rhythm. Passes were overly cautious, and the forwards hesitated in offensive situations, leading to missed opportunities. The first significant chance came in the 22nd minute, but Meziane’s shot lacked precision against Gambian goalkeeper Lamin Saidy. Akhrib then had a promising attempt from 20 meters out, forcing a corner in the 29th minute.

After a motivational talk from coach Madjid Bougherra during halftime, the Algerians returned to the pitch with renewed energy. Notably, the introduction of Adil Boulbina for Bilal Boukerchaoui injected fresh dynamism into the team. This shift was evident when Algeria finally broke the deadlock just a minute into the second half. Following an impressive offensive build-up on the right wing, Abderrahmane Meziane found the net with a low shot at the 46th minute.

Despite this lead, the Gambian side attempted to regroup and mounted pressure for the next ten minutes, briefly pushing into Algerian territory. However, Algeria’s defense, spearheaded by team captain Mohamed Madani, remained resolute. Gambian Modou Sohna managed only a single shot on goal in the 64th minute.

As the match progressed, Algeria regained its composure and was able to double the lead in the 70th minute when Boulbina netted his first goal. The Algerians continued to press, with Akram Bouras narrowly missing the net in the 72nd minute as his shot was saved on the line, followed by a near-miss from Aymen Mahious hitting the post in the 73rd.

Boulbina capped off the performance with a second goal in the 90th minute, solidifying a well-deserved 3-0 victory. This impressive display not only showcased the strength of the Algerian squad but also marked their advancement to the upcoming CHAN 2025 tournament.

The match highlighted Algeria’s determination and resilience, underscoring the potential of local talent. The victory also reflects coach Bougherra’s effective strategy and the players’ ability to adapt under pressure, reassuring fans about the team’s prospects in the upcoming international competition.
