The 9th European Film Festival in Algeria is set to take place from May 10 to 19, featuring 18 films from various European Union (EU) member states. Participating countries include Spain, Romania, Italy, Sweden, and Bulgaria, among others. The festival will be hosted at the Cinémathèque d’Alger, which will feature both fiction and animation films, as well as documentaries. Additional screenings will occur at affiliated cinemas across Béjaïa and Oran.
Diego Mellado Pascua, the EU Ambassador to Algeria, highlighted the festival as a key event that celebrates the richness and diversity of European cinema. This year’s selection will include recent productions like "The Trap" by Bulgarian director Nadjeda Koseva, "The Man Without Guilt" by Slovenia’s Ivan Gergolet, and Claudio Rossi Massimi’s "The Right to Happiness" from Italy. These films tackle various issues such as freedom, family ties, and climate challenges.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will feature master classes conducted by European and Algerian filmmakers and producers. Established in 2009, this festival aims to bridge the gap between Algerian audiences and European cinema while fostering intercultural dialogue, supported by the EU member states in Algeria, the Ministry of Culture and Arts, and the National Center of Cinematography (CAC).
