Title: The Vital Role of Midwives in Maternal and Child Healthcare: Insights from Oran

On Monday, health specialists in Oran convened to shed light on the essential role of midwives in managing maternal and child health, particularly before and after childbirth. This gathering was held in celebration of International Midwives’ Day, which occurs annually on May 5, and this year’s theme was "The Role of Midwives in Times of Crisis."

The event was opened by Hadj Betouaf, the local health sector director, who emphasized the significance of midwives within the national health system, particularly concerning maternal and child health. He stressed the need to reinforce and develop the midwifery profession through the implementation of suitable continuous training programs and improvements in working conditions. This includes equipping midwives with modern tools in line with scientific and professional standards.

Dr. Faïza Mokrane, head of the population service at the health directorate, acknowledged the pivotal contributions of midwives working in the region’s health facilities. She highlighted their efforts in maternal and child protection, which are crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of families.

Furthermore, Pr. Malika Benbouabdellah, a consulting pediatrician, spoke about the crucial role midwives play in the overall management of pregnant women. This includes monitoring their health pre-, during, and post-pregnancy, as well as raising awareness about preventive measures, the benefits of breastfeeding, and early detection of diseases affecting women.

During the event, 84 midwives from public and private health establishments in the Oran region were honored for their dedication and service.

In summary, this gathering not only celebrated the role of midwives but also reinforced the need for ongoing support, training, and the provision of adequate resources in maternal and child healthcare. By doing so, the healthcare system can ensure the health and safety of mothers and their children, particularly in challenging times.
