Le ministre de la Santé rencontre la présidente de l’Union internationale contre le cancer
Summary: Strengthening Cancer Control in Algeria
The Algerian Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, met with Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, President of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), to discuss enhancing cooperation in cancer prevention, research, and medical training. This meeting took place during the National Assizes for Cancer Prevention and Control in Algiers and focused on addressing the rising cancer incidence and related health challenges.
During the discussions, which also included Adda Bounedjar, President of the National Commission for Cancer Prevention and Control, Saihi reaffirmed Algeria’s strong commitment to combating cancer. He highlighted that a significant proportion of the country’s drug budget—nearly half—is currently allocated to cancer medications, which are often expensive. This situation necessitates stronger collaboration with international organizations to secure affordable treatments while promoting local production capabilities for these drugs.
Saihi emphasized the critical role of health awareness campaigns, advocating for increased engagement with civil society and active associations. These groups are seen as essential partners in preventive measures and early detection efforts. In response, Shinkafi-Bagudu commended Algeria’s initiatives and expressed UICC’s readiness to provide technical and scientific support in a mutually beneficial partnership.
The dialogue underscores the pressing need for united efforts in tackling cancer in Algeria, focusing on prevention strategies, accessible medical treatments, and community involvement.
