Summary of the 38th Congress of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU)
The 38th Congress of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) commenced its second and final day on Sunday in Algiers. The gathering, presided over by Mr. Brahim Boughali, who is both the President of AIPU and the President of the National People’s Assembly (APN), focuses on the theme, "The Role of AIPU in Light of Regional and International Changes."
Key Sessions and Discussions
On this significant day, the agenda includes speeches from various presidents of parliaments, assemblies, and Arab parliamentary delegations, along with inputs from invited observing organizations. Notably, reports and recommendations from several commissions, first presented on the inaugural day, will also be reviewed. These include discussions from the Commission on Palestine, as well as those on social affairs, women’s and children’s issues, and political affairs.
Additionally, the congress will dedicate time to adopt the action plan and budget for the AIPU for the fiscal year 2025. The session will conclude with the presentation of the Arab Parliamentary Excellence Awards, finalization of the Declaration of the Congress, and the adoption of its recommendations.
Ongoing Concerns and Calls for Action
In his opening speech, Mr. Boughali expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, labeling it not just a tragedy but a "moral scandal" that demands urgent action from international institutions, which he criticized for their passive stance amidst the suffering of the Palestinian people. He emphasized the urgency for parliamentary diplomacy in both regional and international forums to denounce the occupation’s actions and hold war criminals accountable.
Mr. Boughali reiterated that Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, firmly positions the Palestinian cause at the forefront of its foreign policy, stressing an unwavering commitment to this principle.
The congress serves as a significant platform for Arab parliamentarians to discuss pressing regional issues, reaffirm mutual support, and strengthen cooperative efforts in light of evolving global dynamics.
