On Saturday, the cultural association « Ahl El Andalous » hosted a captivating musical recital in Algiers, featuring the traditional Andalusian music genre. The event took place at the Palais de la Culture Moufdi-Zakaria, drawing a significant audience eager to experience the classical nouba of Algerian music.
This concert marked the inaugural performance by the orchestra of the association, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for attendees. The ensemble showcased a variety of Andalusian pieces, particularly in the Hawzi and Aroubi styles. Under the direction of maestro Hamid Kheddim, a prominent figure in Andalusian singing, the twenty musicians and performers delivered a two-hour program divided into two parts, focusing primarily on pieces derived from the Algerian Sanaa tradition.
The orchestra presented a mix of group performances and solos, demonstrating a range of modal variations. Notable vocalists such as Faiza Bouchedoub, Hania Fassi, Hasna Belamri, Hamida Bouaka, and Mahmoud Hassini lent their rich voices to the repertoire. The second part of the recital featured soloists Mohamed Meziane and Mohamed Khelfat, who took turns performing pieces in the « Moual » mode within the Aroubi genre, as well as the « Raml el Maya » (Hawzi). The concert concluded with a beautiful rendition of a mystical piece praising the Prophet Muhammad.
After the event, Mehdi Ourabia, a member of Ahl El Andalous, remarked that this first official performance highlighted the talents of musicians and singers who revisited classic pieces from Algeria’s rich musical heritage.
