Commemoration of Algerian Workers and Dockers: Remembering the Victims of the OAS Attack

On Saturday, a solemn ceremony was held in Algiers to honor the memory of Algerian workers, particularly dockers, who became martyrs following a terrorist attack orchestrated by the French Secret Army Organization (OAS) at the port of Algiers on May 2, 1962. This event marked the 63rd anniversary of the tragic incident.

The ceremony saw the attendance of officials from the Ministry of Transport, general directors of related institutions, representatives of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), as well as security and customs representatives. A floral tribute was laid at the commemorative plaque dedicated to the martyrs of this attack, followed by the recitation of the Fatiha, a chapter from the Quran.

Abdelhamid Boulaam, the Director-General of the Port Authority of Algiers (EPAL), delivered a poignant speech regarding the implications of the attack, which took place just six weeks after a ceasefire was established. He emphasized the commitment of the port workers to confront challenges within this vital infrastructure, out of respect for those who suffered during the colonial period. He expressed that EPAL is dedicated to forging a successful future, aspiring to become a model enterprise.

Boulaam stressed the importance of enhancing the sector to create modern ports that meet economic and developmental needs. He highlighted notable accomplishments, including the implementation of 24/7 work schedules, flexibility in equipment acquisition, workforce recruitment, and an accelerated pace of project completion. He underscored EPAL’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights and fostering their socio-professional well-being.

The May 2, 1962, attack, executed through a car bomb outside a docker recruitment center, left more than 200 martyrs and an equal number of injuries. The remembrance of this tragedy serves not only to honor those who lost their lives but also to reinforce the ongoing dedication of Algerian workers to build a brighter future.

Through this commemoration, the legacy of resilience and unity in the face of adversity continues to inspire the current and future generations in Algeria.
