Summary of Aïd El-Adha Sheep Sales in Algeria

The sale of imported sheep for Aïd El-Adha will commence next week across various wilayas (regions) in Algeria, as announced by Mohamed Batraoui, CEO of the agro-food and logistics group, Agrolog. The initiative involves collaboration between Agrolog and local authorities to streamline the distribution process.

As of now, nearly 800 sales points have been established nationwide, based on communication from the local authorities. The distribution of the sheep will be carried out according to established quotas, which are coordinated with the local authorities to respond to the specific needs of each wilaya, particularly given the population density.

To ensure efficient sales, Agrolog has designated 3 to 5 trained workers per sales point. Security measures will also be implemented in collaboration with local authorities to ensure safety at these locations, including the mobilization of security personnel.

The price for each sheep is set at 40,000 DZD, with an average weight of over 45 kilograms. Batraoui emphasized the importance of adhering to local criteria for purchasing the imported sheep, aiming to combat potential malpractices like illicit speculation.

Furthermore, the organizational process involves initially quarantining the imported sheep for 3 to 5 days before distributing them to various wilayas based on the predetermined quotas. The sales will continue until May 15, with a potential extension until May 25.

In addition to the imported sheep, Agrolog plans to offer about 10,000 local sheep for sale. This year’s importation aims to stabilize the market and protect the national livestock population, contributing to the overall supply during the festive period.
