Le Maroc échoue à dissocier la cause sahraouie de son statut en tant que question de décolonisation

Summary of Developments on the Sahrawi Cause

On Wednesday in Algiers, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the Sahrawi ambassador to Algeria, criticized the Moroccan regime for its failure to separate the Sahrawi cause from its status as a decolonization issue. Speaking at the "Forum de la Mémoire," organized by the daily newspaper El Moudjahid and the Mechâal Echahid association, he emphasized that if the Moroccan government were legitimate, it could have resolved the territorial dispute swiftly through elections.

Omar pointed out that Morocco has not succeeded in securing official recognition of its claimed sovereignty over the occupied Sahrawi territories. He affirmed that the support of the United States for Morocco’s expansionist agenda does not alter the legal status of the Sahrawi issue, which requires a resolution acceptable to both parties, effectively invalidating the autonomy proposal.

He condemned the normalization between the Moroccan government and Israel, particularly given Israel’s ongoing occupation and violence against the Palestinian people. Omar highlighted that there is significant public opposition within Morocco to this alliance, with demonstrations occurring daily against such normalization.

Moreover, he commended Algeria’s steadfast and unconditional support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle for self-determination. During the forum, Bettahar Lazreg, a representative of the Algerian nation’s Council, reiterated the consistent support of various political parties for the Sahrawi cause.

Representatives from Algerian civil society also expressed solidarity with Sahrawi detainees, particularly those associated with the Gdeim Izik protest and students facing unfair trials. They condemned the inhumane conditions these detainees endure in Moroccan prisons, asserting that these situations violate international humanitarian standards, including the Geneva Conventions and anti-torture agreements.

Conclusion

The continued dialogue surrounding the Sahrawi cause indicates a persistent struggle for decolonization and acknowledgment of rights within the broader context of regional geopolitics. The unwavering support from Algeria and other nations emphasizes the importance of self-determination in international relations.
