Summary of Agreements to Support Elderly Care in Algeria

On Monday in Algiers, three significant agreements were signed among the Ministries of National Solidarity, Tourism, Culture, and Labor to enhance support and care for the elderly. The signing ceremony was led by Minister of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Affairs, Soraya Mouloudji, alongside other key ministers such as Fayçal Bentaleb (Labor, Employment, and Social Security), Houria Meddahi (Tourism and Handicrafts), and Zouhir Ballalou (Culture and Arts).

These agreements are part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives aimed at strengthening social solidarity mechanisms and promoting the protection of elderly citizens. Mouloudji emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring effective assistance for the elderly through various healthcare and social support programs.

Each year, the government allocates a significant budget for social operations benefiting economically vulnerable elderly individuals living at home. For the 2025 fiscal year, the funding designated for these initiatives totals approximately 449 million Algerian Dinars (DA).

Agreement Highlights

  1. Tourism and Handicrafts Agreement:

    • This agreement specifies a 50% discount on care services within public thermal establishments for the elderly.
    • It grants free transport and lodging during organized tourist excursions for holders of elderly and disability cards.
    • Elderly women involved in productive family programs receive free training to showcase their products.
  2. Culture and Arts Agreement:

    • A 50% discount on entry fees to cultural and artistic venues, including theaters and cinemas.
    • Free access is provided to museums, archaeological sites, and public libraries for those holding elderly cards.
  3. Labor Agreement:
    • Establishes a dedicated service desk for elderly individuals to facilitate their access to social security coverage at local offices.
    • Allows designated staff from the National Solidarity sector to assist in submitting documents and managing the issuance of Chifa cards for beneficiaries of the fixed solidarity allowance.

These collaborative efforts indicate a robust commitment from the Algerian government to enhance the living conditions and rights of elderly citizens, providing them with necessary financial, health, and cultural resources. The outlined programs reflect an integrated approach to improving the quality of life for this demographic by developing a comprehensive support system spanning multiple sectors.
