Zouheir Hamedi Named Executive Director of RCREEE

The Appointment
Zouheir Hamedi, an Algerian national, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE). His election took place in February, where he received overwhelming support from the majority of members of the Center’s Secretary Council.

Ceremony Highlights
The installation ceremony was held on Sunday at the RCREEE headquarters in Cairo, presided over by Mohamed Aissa, the chair of the executive committee. During the event, Aissa congratulated Hamedi and wished him success in his new role. In response, Hamedi expressed pride in the trust placed in him and affirmed his commitment to advancing the Center’s objectives and the aspirations of its member states.

Background and Experience
Hamedi was elected following a significant vote during the 24th session of the Center, which took place on February 18-19 in Kuwait, attended by Secretary of State for Energy, Noureddine Yassaâ. His professional journey began at Sonatrach Group, Algeria’s national oil and gas company. He later transitioned into academia, acquiring a Ph.D. in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies from Durham University in the UK. His thesis focused on energy diversification in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries through 2050. Additionally, he holds a Magister degree in International Relations and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from the American University in Cairo.

Before his appointment at RCREEE, Hamedi worked at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), where he managed operations for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Its mission is to coordinate regional efforts to promote renewable energy usage and improve energy efficiency in line with its strategic plan approved by the Secretary Council. The organization plays a crucial role in enhancing collaboration among member states to meet their energy challenges sustainably.

As the new Executive Director, Hamedi is expected to lead the Center in its mission to foster innovation, promote renewable energy, and support the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives across the Arab nations, aligning with global trends in sustainable development.
