Summary: Enhancing Burn Care in Algeria’s Healthcare System

On Thursday in Algiers, Health Minister Abdelhak Saihi emphasized Algeria’s readiness to provide optimal care for burn victims in accordance with international standards. During a session at the National People’s Assembly (APN), where government officials addressed parliamentary inquiries, Saihi assured the assembly that Algeria possesses sufficient material and human resources to support these care standards, which dictate that each burn patient should have access to an individual bed.

Algeria has made significant strides in this area by establishing several specialized facilities dedicated to burn treatment. The country is home to a major burn hospital in Zéralda, near Algiers, with a capacity of 160 beds. Additionally, there are facilities in other regions, such as a 120-bed hospital in Oran, and smaller hospitals with 12 beds each in Sétif and Annaba. A new facility is being constructed in Ouargla accommodating 45 beds, and another in Tiaret with 60 beds. These developments reflect the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure for burn victims.

The Zéralda hospital plays a crucial role in serving patients from various wilayas, indicating that similar resources are available in both eastern and western regions of the country. Each facility is equipped with the necessary specialties, medications, and treatment options to adequately care for burn patients.

Minister Saihi highlighted the government’s dedication to providing comprehensive care, including post-hospitalization plastic surgery, once adequate bed availability is assured. He mentioned plans for additional hospitals to be constructed in Tiaret, Ouargla, Skikda, Ghardaïa, Adrar, and other locations in the future.

In response to questions from parliamentarians regarding the health sector’s status in various wilayas, Saihi outlined the strategy of the Ministry of Health for 2023. This plan primarily focuses on restarting projects that had been stalled prior to 2019 and ensuring that new initiatives launched after 2023 receive the necessary attention and resources. Furthermore, he underlined the importance of training new medical professionals, detailing plans for the annual preparation of 350 specialists in gynecology-obstetrics, radiology, and intensive care. This initiative aims to bolster the healthcare workforce across the nation, particularly in the southern wilayas, where 146 specialists are assigned each year.

The minister’s statements reflect a broader effort by the Algerian government to address healthcare needs effectively, particularly in the field of burn treatment, and to ensure that all citizens have access to high-quality medical services.
