Summary of Algeria’s Engagement at the 163rd Arab League Ministerial Council Meeting

On Wednesday, the Algerian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sofiane Chaib, led a delegation at the 163rd session of the Arab League Council of Ministers, held at the League’s headquarters under the chairmanship of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This session was marked by discussions addressing significant Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, which remains central to Arab solidarity. Other critical topics included the current situations in Syria, Sudan, and Somalia, as well as the Arab cooperation processes with regional and international actors.

During the session, Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly in light of their current dire circumstances. Algeria called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the provision of humanitarian aid, and support for the reconstruction of areas devastated by the Israeli occupation. Algeria additionally backed initiatives aimed at recognizing Palestine as a full-fledged member state of the United Nations and advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

The session emphasized Algeria’s continuous efforts to foster collective Arab action and the principle of solidarity in confronting regional challenges. The Algerian contributions as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in support of the Palestinian cause received commendation from the Council. Furthermore, the Arab League expressed approval of the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Algeria’s guiding principles for combating terrorism financing.

Notably, Algeria’s successful presidency of negotiations leading to the adoption of a comprehensive international convention to combat the misuse of information and communication technologies for criminal purposes was also celebrated during this meeting.

Alongside the main session, Chaib participated in a meeting of the Arab Ministerial Committee for Al-Quds, reaffirming Algeria’s longstanding position regarding the city and its commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at preserving its identity and halting Israeli violations.

In conclusion, Algeria emerged from the 163rd Arab League Ministerial Council meeting as a strong advocate for Palestinian rights and regional solidarity, with commitments to both humanitarian and diplomatic initiatives intended to address ongoing conflicts within the Arab world.
