Minister Ghrieb’s Visit to Jijel: A Milestone for Algeria’s Industrial Sector
On Wednesday afternoon, in Jijel, Minister of Industry Sifi Ghrieb announced that Algeria would initiate the certification and compliance process for spare parts next week. This initiative is heralded as a crucial first step towards establishing a comprehensive industrial manufacturing sector in Algeria.
During his two-day visit to Jijel, Ghrieb emphasized the importance of setting up a national certification network for various industrial activities, stating that it would serve as the "cornerstone of an integrated industrial base." This move is expected to facilitate the development of a genuine Algerian industry by ensuring that local products meet essential quality standards.
Ghrieb’s visit included an inspection of the workshops at the Precision Mechanics Company (SOMEMI), located in the Ouled-Salah industrial zone of Taher. Founded in 1990, SOMEMI has emerged as one of North Africa’s largest private enterprises specializing in precision mechanics. Adel Bensaci, the General Director of SOMEMI, highlighted the company’s achievements, including the export of spare parts to Airbus in 2009. SOMEMI is also involved in manufacturing components for satellites, and the company plans to start large-scale exports to several foreign markets by early 2026.
In addition to his visit to SOMEMI, Minister Ghrieb toured a cork transformation company in Bourmel and is scheduled to review the Kotama Agrifood project, which focuses on oilseed grinding and oil extraction. On Thursday, he will further inspect the "Chemiserie Djen Djen" company, the Jijel tannery, and a project aimed at developing the industrial zone in Bellara, located in the commune of El Milia.
Through these visits, Ghrieb conveyed his commitment to supporting local actors and operators striving to enhance their projects, ultimately working towards a robust and sustainable national industry. The emphasis on certification reflects the government’s strategy to bolster local manufacturing capabilities and asserts a clear direction on achieving an industrial expansion that aligns with Algeria’s economic goals.
