Seminar on the 20th Mediterranean Games

In Tarente, Italy, on April 16, 2025, the organizing committee for the 20th edition of the Mediterranean Games, scheduled for August 21 to September 3, 2026, is set to coordinate an international seminar. This event, held at the media center at Villaggio Italia in Tarente, is in collaboration with the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) and the Italian news agency ANSA.

Themed "Mediterranean Games Tarente 2026: Sporting Legacy, Sustainability, and Cultural Dialogue," the seminar aims to bring together media agencies from various Mediterranean countries, notably including the Algerian Press Service (APS). The agenda incorporates several presentations. Among the speakers is Massimo Ferraris, the president of the organizing committee for the Tarente 2026 Games. Carlo Molfetta, the committee’s general manager, and Stavros Bello, president of the advisory committee, will also provide an introductory overview of the event.

A highlight of the seminar is the presentation by Belkacem Dridi, a journalist from APS, who will speak on the legacy of the 19th Mediterranean Games held in Oran in 2022. This event saw athletes from 26 countries across the Mediterranean compete in 24 different sports, illustrating the event’s broad reach and impact.

The seminar will also feature Francesco Fischetti, a professor at the University of Bari, who will deliver a talk titled "The Mediterranean Games: A Lever for Well-being and a Healthy Lifestyle for a Sustainable Future." He will discuss how sports can unite young athletes from the region and serve as a vital tool for sustainable development.

Originally scheduled from June 12 to 21, 2026, the Mediterranean Games were postponed due to a clash with the FIFA World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This will be the fourth time Italy has hosted the Mediterranean Games, having previously held them in Naples (1963), Bari (1997), and Pescara (2009).

The Mediterranean Games were founded in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, in honor of Mohamed Taher Becha, a pioneer in the creation of the event. Since their inception, these games have been held every four years. Algeria has hosted the Mediterranean Games twice, in 1975 (the 7th edition) and 2022 (the 19th edition).

Summary

The 20th Mediterranean Games will take place in Tarente, Italy, from August 21 to September 3, 2026. The event will focus on themes such as sporting legacy, sustainability, and cultural dialogue. An international seminar will precede the event, bringing together media from various Mediterranean countries and including significant presentations by key figures in the organization. This gathering will underscore the importance of the Games in fostering unity and promoting healthy lifestyles among the youth of the Mediterranean region.

The postponement of the Games from their original June 2026 dates is a direct result of conflicts with the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Hosted previously in Italy, the Mediterranean Games have a rich history dating back to their establishment in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, aiming to highlight the spirit of cooperation among Mediterranean nations through athletic competition.

The seminar will not only discuss the logistics and preparations for the upcoming Games but also reflect on the legacy of previous editions, particularly the Oran 2022 Games, which showcased the talents of athletes from 26 countries. Through the lens of media, culture, and sustainability, this event aims to set the stage for a successful 20th edition in Tarente while emphasizing the historical significance and continuing evolution of the Mediterranean Games.
