Dakhla: Eighth International Conference of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People

The eighth international conference in solidarity with the Sahrawi people commenced on Saturday morning at the Dakhla refugee camp, coinciding with the 10th Congress of the General Union of Workers of Sakia el-Hamra and Oued Dahab (UGTSARIO). This event serves as a critical platform for discussing the rights of workers globally, particularly in regions still under occupation.

During the opening session, various speakers emphasized the urgent need for international labor unions to advocate for workers’ rights worldwide, with a special focus on those in occupied territories. Lotheer Rodriguez, coordinator of the Canarian labor movement supporting the Sahrawi people, passionately asserted that "the Sahrawi people are the sole and legitimate owners of Western Sahara," expressing strong optimism for their eventual return to a free and prosperous homeland.

Chahira Mostefaoui, Secretary of Information and Digital Affairs of the Algerian General Union of Workers (UGTA), reiterated the organization’s solidarity with Sahrawi workers until they achieve victory and independence. Similarly, Arezki Mezhoud, Secretary General of the African Trade Union Unity Organization (OUSA), highlighted the significance of this international conference as a gathering of trade unionists and activists from various regions, including Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. He underscored the potential for this event to amplify the Sahrawi cause within the global labor movement.

Mezhoud also pointed out the conference’s role in mobilizing international union opinions and fostering global solidarity around the Sahrawi struggle. This is especially critical given the current climate of confusion and misinformation prevalent around the world. The conference aims to foster greater awareness and support for the Sahrawi cause on a global scale.

The 10th Congress of UGTSARIO, named after the martyr Ibrahim El Mahjoub, continues to unfold with participation from over 400 Sahrawi delegates and more than 80 international guests. This assembly underscores the collective commitment to the Sahrawi cause and the broader struggle for workers’ rights in contexts of colonialism and occupation.

In summary, the eighth international conference in solidarity with the Sahrawi people serves not only as a platform for rallying international labor support but also as a significant event to discuss human rights and independence for the Sahrawi nation. Attendees are united in their call for global awareness and support, amplifying the voices of those still grappling with the effects of occupation.
