Summary of the Launch of Algeria’s Largest Fishing Vessel

Introduction of the Z’malet El-Emir Abdelkader

Recently, the Z’malet El-Emir Abdelkader, the largest professional fishing vessel of its kind in Algeria, was launched at the El Marsa port in the north-western part of the Chlef province. This large tuna seiner is a significant achievement in the country’s naval construction capabilities.

Local Craftsmanship

According to Hocine Melikeche, the director of the local fishing and aquaculture sector in Chlef, the construction and repair workshop in El Marsa successfully built this impressive fishing vessel entirely with Algerian skills and resources. The ship is anticipated to undergo necessary technical tests soon to prepare for its upcoming service entry.

A specialized ministerial commission is set to inspect the 42-meter-long fishing vessel to ensure safety and navigational conditions before it officially takes to the sea. Melikeche emphasized that the production of this vessel enhances the local fishing fleet and contributes significantly to offshore fishing activities, which may lead to increased fish production and improved food security in Algeria.

Investment in Local Industries

Sofiane Moussaoui, the manager of the company responsible for constructing the vessel, reported that the integration rate for raw materials used in this project is estimated at 85%, with a remarkable 100% integration for labor and technical supervision. This high level of local integration supports the Algerian economy by creating jobs and bolstering domestic industries involved in shipbuilding.

Symbolism Behind the Name

The vessel was named after Emir Abdelkader, honoring him as a symbol of resistance and a key figure in modern Algerian statehood. This commemorative gesture reflects the pride associated with building the ship and acknowledges the historical significance of the Emir in Algeria’s quest for independence.

Technical Specifications of the Vessel

The Z’malet El-Emir Abdelkader is designed for offshore fishing with noteworthy technical specifications. It measures 42 meters in length and 10.5 meters in width, allowing it to navigate for extended periods, between 45 to 50 days at sea. The vessel features cold storage rooms with a capacity of 50 tons and can carry a maximum load of 450 tons, alongside onboard tanks for water and fuel.

With powerful 2,500-horsepower engines, the boat boasts operational prowess. It will be managed by a crew of 25 to 35 sailors of varying ranks, providing ample manpower for its extensive fishing operations.

Conclusion

Scheduled for entry into service in May, the Z’malet El-Emir Abdelkader not only signifies a leap forward in Algeria’s fishing capabilities but also stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to enhancing its maritime industry through local expertise and resources. The successful launch of this vessel demonstrates Algeria’s potential in developing a robust fishing fleet, thus contributing to its economic growth while ensuring food security for its population.
