Meeting in Italy Advances Algeria-ENI Cooperation

In a meeting held on Tuesday in Ravenna, Italy, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, engaged in talks with Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian energy company ENI. This significant gathering took place during the Med Energy conference, accompanied by executives from Algeria’s leading energy firms, Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, including their respective CEOs Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal.

The discussions primarily focused on the current status and future prospects of the collaboration between Sonatrach and ENI. Both parties explored avenues to expand their partnership in various sectors, especially in hydrocarbon exploration and development. Additionally, they considered new projects that encompass offshore hydrocarbon exploitation, renewable energy initiatives, and green hydrogen production.

A pivotal topic of conversation was the Medlink project, a high-voltage underwater electricity interconnection planned between Algeria and Italy. This strategic initiative is one of the European Union’s priorities and aims to facilitate the exportation of 2,000 megawatts of electricity, significantly enhancing Algeria’s position as a reliable energy supplier, particularly in green energy.

Descalzi expressed satisfaction with the current partnership with Algerian energy companies, emphasizing ENI’s commitment to deepen its cooperation with Sonatrach and Sonelgaz through innovative projects that support energy transition. He highlighted the importance of initiatives focused on training, research, and development in this endeavor.

In response, Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to strengthening its collaboration with strategic partners, especially ENI. He stressed the importance of intensifying exploration, production, and infrastructure development activities while also emphasizing the enhancement of national skills through training programs and technical exchanges.

In summary, the meetings underscored both Algeria’s commitment to expanding its energy partnerships, especially with ENI, and the strategic significance of projects like Medlink that align with broader EU energy goals. The focus on training and local capacity building also reflects Algeria’s intent to foster a sustainable energy landscape in collaboration with international partners.
